We’ve got Bluebirds!! Frankly, we’re completely surprised. Against all the well-researched advice for bluebird boxes, they’ve set up residence:
a) Just 2 weeks ago (nesting season began in March)
b) 9’ up (nesting box suggestions say “not more than 5’ high”)
c) Facing north (supposed to prefer facing south)
d) In an awkward-corner-hole-space of a painted metal railcar (???)…
e) Which opens immediately upon our heavily-trafficked truck driveway (a far cry from a peaceful meadow)
f) About 20’ from the store (they tend to like unobstructed, open areas)
After some more research, we came to realize that this awkward spot is actually a pretty clever pick. (Additionally, we suspect the birds did not read the articles before building.) They’re not bothered by the vehicles, but if we look directly at the nest (even from a distance) the adults fly out. There are plenty of overhead wires around to perch and keep an eye on things. They found the pine needles for the nest 100’ away. The hole is sealed and waterproof, with only the one entrance. The spot’s awkward height makes it safe from predators. We’ve got PLENTY of available bugs. Jamie’s guess is that the north-facing spot is working for them because the dark-painted trailer absorbs and stores heat. And the close building may be protecting the cavity from wind and weather. Isn’t it great when nature outsmarts us?
*At last quick check, we’ve got at least 2 babies and maybe 3. All are doing well! They look to be about 4 or 5 days old.
